Analysing Movie Clips

In todays lesson (10/9/2015) we learnt how to analyse movie clips using acronyms such as 'CLAMP' and 'DISTINCT' to describe what is happening in the clip. Clamp stands for costume, lighting, actors, make up, props, and then settings. Distinct stands for describe, in detail, settings, themes, icons, narration, characters, text analysis.

For todays task we had to pick a film opening of our choice and analyse it using the skills we learnt. I chose to analyse 'The Conjuring'.

In this opening scene I noticed the sound effects which created suspense and builds tension, we are introduced to the main character who is anxious and scared. The settings are at night and in a large, creaky house. The theme is a thriller as there is clearly someone or something torturing her and has haunted the house she is in. The icon is the letter in this scene that said 'miss me?'. Another icon is the 'Annabelle doll', they are there to scare the girls. We are introduced to the main characters, which are the people who are afraid (the three girls) and then the husband and wife who are trying to help them overcome their problem. There isn't any text in this opening scene.

Clueless

Settings- The film is set in a suburb in America, the first part of the scene that is set in a modern house, we are introduced to the main characters which are the teenage girl and her wealthy father.
Themes- Teen, romance, and comedy.
Icons- The main icon in the opening seen is the main character Cher's car, which is an expensive car this again highlights the wealth of the family. Another icon is that the fonts and backgrounds at the beginning are vibrant and bubbly which draws the audience attention towards them.
Narrative-
Characters- In this scene  we are introduced to the daughter Cher and her father, it is clear to us that Cher gets everything she wants due to the income her dad gets, although we sense that there is a bit of tension between them.
Text- Chers high pitched voice shows her innocence and completely clueless personality, the way she says 'daddy' shows us that she is close to her dad and demands and gets everything she wants of him by using him to her advantage.
Costume- Chers outfit choices implies that she has the wealth to wear posh clothes that stand out to other people, highlighting the fact she is 'Miss Popular'.
Lighting- The lighting is bright and cheerful to show that its a happy joyful film for teenagers.

Harry brown

Settings-  The film is set in London, I assume this because of the characters accents.
Themes- The theme is crime, I know this because of what happens in the beginning of the scene and the teenagers behaviours.
Icons- The icons in this scene are the guns that symbolize crime and the hoodies the characters are wearing which is a stereotypical symbol that the characters are misbehaving.
Narrative- The narrative is worked out whilst listening to the characters describing what is happening.
Characters- We are introduced to the main characters which are multiple boys in a gang, one member is forcing someone to join their gang, in the second half of the scene one of the boys was forced is given and gun to complete a mission to prove he is worthy enough to join the gang.
TextThe boys are saying terms such as 'you already to become a man' and rude terms which highlights their disrespect to each other and how they treat each other.
CostumeThe people involved in the gang are wearing hoodies to symbolise that they are part of a 'gang' and what to be hidden. the hoodies are black which symbolises danger and death.
LightingThe lightening at the beginning is dark and you cant fully see what is going on because of the darkest, I get the impression they are in a dark dangerous alleyway. in the second part of the scene we see one of the members on a motorbike in daylight.

What lies beneath

Settings- The film is set in America, in this scene the main character is in her big modern house, during the night.
Themes- The theme is a thriller, I get the impression that the male neighbour is harming the female neighbour which is dangerous and worrying, this therefore makes the theme a thriller.
Icons- The icons in this scene are the fence which is preventing the female neighbours from contacting eachother, also the window in with the couple watch what happens in their neighbours house.
Narrative- The scene consists of mysterious music in the background, consisting on sounds that build tension which therefore make the audience feel like something negative is going to happen innimently. The couple are new to the neighbourhood and the lady begins to feel concerned about her female neighbour as the scene continues, and tries to convince her husband that something is not quite right with her.
Characters- We are introduced to the main character who is the woman and her husband and their neighbour who is an unstable emotional woman.
TextThe speech is normal in the film, the couple have a American accent.
CostumeThe lady is wearing normal basic clothes to symbolize the fact she is a noraml women of that age and that she isnt full of wealth.
LightingThe lightening is dark and spooky to highlight the fact the lady is anxious, in the second half of the scene the lady is concerned about her neighbour and the lightening is birght at that point.
