Film opening anaylsis

Media Project:
Film opening should last for around 2 minutes.
The following things are important when making a film opening:
  • Costumes
  • Sounds
  • Location
  • Trial runs
  • Dialogue
  • Plan B (in case of absence)
  • Story board
  • Establishing shot
  • Target audience
  • Title's (actors names)

This is the film opening mark criteria

Level 1 0–23 marks The work for the main task is possibly incomplete. There is minimal evidence in the work of the creative use of any relevant technical skills such as:• Producing material appropriate for the target audience and task; • using titles appropriately according to institutional conventions; • using sound with images and editing appropriately for the task set;• shooting material appropriate to the task set; including controlled use of the camera, attention to framing, variety of shot distance and close attention to mise-en-scene; • using editing so that meaning is apparent to the viewer and making selective and appropriate use of shot transitions and other effects. Level 2 24–35 marks There is evidence of a basic level of ability in the creative use of some of the following technical skills:• Producing material appropriate for the target audience and task; • using titles appropriately according to institutional conventions; • using sound with images and editing appropriately for the task set;• shooting material appropriate to the task set;, including controlled use of the camera, attention to framing, variety of shot distance and close attention to mise-en-scene; • using editing so that meaning is apparent to the viewer and making selective and appropriate use of shot transitions and other effects. Level 3 36–47 marks There is evidence of proficiency in the creative use of many of the following technical skills:• Producing material appropriate for the target audience and task; • using titles appropriately according to institutional conventions; • using sound with images and editing appropriately for the task set;• shooting material appropriate to the task set; including controlled use of the camera, attention to framing, variety of shot distance and close attention to mise-en-scene; • using editing so that meaning is apparent to the viewer and making selective and appropriate use of shot transitions and other effects.Level 4 48–60 marks There is evidence of excellence in the creative use of most of the following technical skills:• material appropriate for the target audience and task;• using titles appropriately according to institutional conventions;• using sound with images and editing appropriately for the task set;• shooting material appropriate to the task set;including controlled use of the camera, attention to framing, variety of shot distance and close attention to mise-en-scene;• using editing so that meaning is apparent to the viewer and making selective and appropriate use of shot transitions and other effects.

I have marked the films below using the marking criteria .

Film openings:

'Alone'

In the film opening 'Alone' there is a establishing and disappearing shot, there is variety of effects and a lot of editing used. Alone using the enigma code to get the target audience interested in the film, so they therefore watch the full movie. There was not a lot of acting in the opening. The sound was good as it was scary and fitted with the scene well. Although I think it would have been better if it was set at night because most scary movies are set at night as it makes the audience more scared. This film opening would score a level 4.

'The Edge'

In the film opening 'The Edge' there are good titles which makes the opening strong, the sound was good. The scary sounds fitted well with the story line, the ending was good and dramatic. Although the film opening went on for too long, about a minute of it was unnecessary and not needed. This film opening would score a level 4.

'Blitz'

In the film opening 'Blitz' it is hard to hear the voice of the characters and the camera skills are poor towards the end of it. The storyline was good and clear and the sound made sense. The ending was strong and left the audience wanted to watch more. This film opening would score a level 4.

'Luna'

In the film opening 'Luna' there is a range of different locations which makes the opening good as it shows variety, the story line is good and so is the music and sound used. The titles were good and clever although the whole opening did lack originality. This film opening would score a level 4.

'Poscig'

In the film opening 'Poscig' there is a lot of enigma we get from the title as the film is foreign, due to the film being foreign there is loads of originality making the film more interesting for viewers and different to other films. The Foley sound used was good, therefore this film opening would score a level 4.

'Roses are Red'

In the film opening 'Roses are Red'  the titles are in the wrong order although the credits are good. Personally I found that not much happened, the filming was poor, there was not much of a story line, and that the film opening had been done before. Therefore I would score this film a Level 3.

'Defenestration'

In the film opening 'defenestration' the titles are good, but I found that there was poor acting and low enigma, I also wasn't interested in he storyline. Although the editing was good as so was the camera work, the Foley sound varied from being poor to good. I would therefore score is film a level 3.

'Selena'

In the film opening 'selena' there isn't much of an establishing setting and there are subtitles throughout the opening which in my opinion makes it look poor. The music wasn't relevant to the story line and because the actors weren't actually speaking they used subtitles to show the conversation the story line was unclear. There are no titles used therefore I would I've is film opening a level 2.

'The organ player'

In the film opening 'The organ player' the tiles are clear and fit with the story line. The sound works very well. The setting is established quickly, and all shots are of good quality. There is a lot of enigma which makes me as the audience want to continue watching the film. I would therefore score this film a level 4.
